PLOT OF THE FILM
Spring of 1917. The February revolution has changed the life of Russia and the course of the Great War. The Emperor has abdicated. In the trenches of Smorgon, where the confrontation with the Germans has lasted for more than a year, Bolsheviks wage their propaganda. They called for peace with the enemy. Russian officers in fact couldn't solve anything without the approval of the so-called soldiers' committees. The army was on the verge of final dissolution.
By order of the Provisional Government to raise the morale of the army, the "Battalion" was created under the command of the St. George Cross cavalier Maria Bochkareva.
In the ranks of the "shock troopers battalion" were primarily female soldiers from the front part (there was a small number of female soldiers in the Russian Imperial Army, each of which had claimed the approval of highest resolution, even the Cavaliers of St. George Cross), but also women from Civil society - noblewoman, girl students, teachers, workers. The Great was part soldiers' and Cossacks.
The Bochkareva's battalion consisted girls from famous Russian noble families, and simple peasants and servants. For example, Maria Skrydlova - the daughter of Admiral N.I.Skrydlov. served as Bochkareva's adjutant. The nationalities of these female volunteers were mostly Russian, but among them there were also other nationalities including Estonians, Latvian, Jewish, English.
In late June, a female "Death Battalion" composed of two hundred people came to the army under the Smorgon (now Belarus), and joined battle one week later. Several times the battalion conducted counter-attacks. The detachment under the command of Lieutenant Bochkareva behaved heroically in battle, always in the front lines, while serving on a par with the soldiers. They carried ammunition, performed discharge, while some scouted; the service of the "Death Battalion" set an example of bravery, courage and calmness, raised the spirit of the soldiers and showed that each of those women were heroes worthy of the title of soldier of the Russian army.
